Lesson Plan
Introduction: (5 minutes)
Introduce the topic of proper nouns to the class and explain that a proper noun is the name given to a particular person, place, or thing.
To help get the children thinking about the importance of proper nouns, ask the class for examples of proper nouns and write their answers on the board (e.g. Edinburgh, Michael, Big Ben).
Once the importance of proper nouns is established, ask the children to watch the following video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNmlPNwEjTQ (2 minutes)
Lesson Outline: (20 minutes)
Give everyone a copy of the worksheet provided below and explain that it is to help them understand the differences between proper and common nouns.
Read through the examples of nouns on the worksheet and ask for volunteers to read them out aloud and decide whether they are proper or common nouns.
Divide the class into groups of four and ask them to complete the activity independently.
Questioning:
Throughout the worksheet activity, the teacher should ask questions to check pupils’ understanding (e.g.
• What is a proper noun? • Can you give me an example of a proper noun? • What type of noun is “fair”? • Are “London” and “city” both proper nouns?
This will ensure that pupils are understanding the material correctly.
Assessment:
At the end of the activity, the teacher should ask each group to explain why the nouns in their worksheet are either proper or common.
This will help the teacher to assess each pupils’ understanding of the topic.
Differentiation:
Pupils should be allowed to choose their own level of challenge. Some pupils may not feel comfortable attempting the worksheet and would instead prefer to complete a drawing or writing task about proper nouns. This will allow pupils to engage with the same material but in different ways.
Plenary: (3 minutes)
To end the lesson, the teacher should ask the class to summarise in their own words why it is important to know the difference between proper and common nouns.
