Introduction (5 minutes): In this lesson, we are going to learn what proper nouns are, and how they are used differently from common nouns.
Lesson Outline (30 minutes): • Explain what a proper noun is and how it is different from a common noun (e.g., proper nouns represent names, and always begin with a capital letter). • Show some examples of proper nouns (e.g., London, Michael, Mrs. Smith, Thursday). • Show a simple video clip on proper nouns (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2WmV898u0M). • Do worksheet exercises to identify proper nouns and practice writing them (worksheet resource: https://www.k5learning.com/sites/all/files/worksheets/grammar-proper-nouns-grade-3.pdf).
Questioning (10 minutes): • Ask the children to give examples of proper nouns (e.g., names, places, days of the week, months of the year, etc.). • Guide the children in practicing proper nouns by giving sentences, and asking them to rewrite them with proper nouns instead of common nouns.
Assessment (5 minutes): • Ask the children to give random examples of proper nouns. • Ask open-ended questions to check comprehension of proper nouns (e.g., what is a proper noun? What does a proper noun do differently from a common noun?).
Differentiation (5 minutes): • Give the children a variety of worksheets to choose from that increases in difficulty (e.g., from fill-in-the-blank to sentence creation). • Give the children different writing prompts that require them to use proper nouns.
Plenary (5 minutes): • Create a class wall of proper nouns where each student adds a proper noun to the list. • Ask the children to explain why proper nouns are important and why they should use them correctly.
