Introduction Welcome to today’s lesson on proper nouns. A proper noun is a special type of noun. It is a word that is used for a person, place, thing, or a specific idea. Words like ‘London’ and ‘John’ are both examples of proper nouns.

Today, we are going to learn:

• What a proper noun is • How to identify a proper noun

Outline 1. Introduce the concept of a proper noun. 2. Show some examples and explain why they are classified as proper nouns. 3. Introduce the worksheets and give out to the students. 4. Help the students fill out the worksheet. 5. Show the video ‘Proper Nouns with Mr. J’. 6. Encourage the students to work in pairs to find more examples of proper nouns. 7. Allow the students to give examples of their own.

Questioning Throughout the lesson, use questions to further engage the students and keep them on track. Questions could include:

• What is a proper noun? • What are some examples of proper nouns? • What should you observe when looking for proper nouns?

Assessment Assessment should be ongoing throughout the lesson with the use of quality questioning and ideas shared by the students. This will allow you to assess their understanding of the concept of proper nouns and their ability to identify them.

Differentiation Differentiation could include providing scaffolding to weaker students, asking more challenging questions to more able students, or providing additional activities to the more able students.

Plenary The plenary can involve encouraging some of the students to explain their understanding of proper nouns to the class, asking each student to give one example of a proper noun, or providing a worksheet challenge for the more able students.
