Introduction:
Greet the class and explain that today you are going to be focusing on proper nouns. Talk about some examples of common proper nouns, such as peoples’ names, places and titles, to get the children thinking about what a proper noun is. Ask the class if they can think of any other examples and let them share their ideas.
Lesson Outline:
Explain that a proper noun is the name of a person, place, thing or title with a capital letter at the beginning. In comparison, explain what a common noun is and how we use general words to describe an object. Show an example on the board.
Introduce the worksheet and ask the children to fill in the blank sentences with the correct proper nouns. Let them work in pairs or small groups and give them around 10 minutes to finish.
Questioning:
Get the children to explain their answers to the worksheet to help them understand the concept better. Ask further questions about any of the topics discussed such as why we use capital letters for proper nouns and what types of objects are proper nouns.
Assessment:
Assess the children’s understanding of the lesson by seeing how well they did on the worksheet. Ask the children to give you some examples of proper nouns to see how well they have grasped the topic.
Differentiation:
Support children who need additional help by providing a word bank on the worksheet for them to use as a reference.
Plenary:
Show the children the video about proper nouns on Education.com (Link: https://www.education.com/video/what-is-a-proper-noun/). Ask the children some questions after the video to check their understanding of the topic.
