Introduction:

Introduce the concept of proper nouns. Explain that proper nouns are specific names for people, places, or things that begin with a capital letter. Show pictures of places, people, and things, and ask the children if they are proper nouns and why/why not.

Lesson Outline:

  • Read a few sentences out loud to the students which contain proper nouns and explain why each word is a proper noun. Ask the students to identify the proper nouns.

  • Explain the difference between common nouns and proper nouns, and have the students come up with examples of each.

  • Give a series of example sentences that contain proper nouns, and have the students write down what each proper noun is.

  • Show the students how to correctly capitalize proper nouns, and have them practice writing sentences with correctly capitalized proper nouns.

  • Have the students play a game in which they need to identify proper nouns in sentences.

Questioning:

Throughout the lesson, ask the students questions to check for understanding and ensure engagement. Some examples of questions could include:

  • What is a proper noun?

  • Can you give an example of a proper noun?

  • How can we tell when a word is a proper noun?

  • What is the difference between a common noun and a proper noun?

  • How do we capitalize proper nouns?

Assessment:

At the end of the lesson, have the students write a sentence requiring the use of a proper noun. Ask the students to then pair up and verbally quiz each other on proper noun related questions.

Differentiation:

Provide students with different levels of worksheets to cater to different ability levels.

Plenary:

Have the students watch a short video summarizing the lesson. Here is an example of a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qM6OooF6XE
