Introduction (5 minutes):
To introduce the concept of proper nouns to the primary 3 class, begin by introducing yourself and the lesson topic. Provide a brief explanation of what a proper noun is, emphasising that these are special names that are often given to people, places and things.
Explain to the students that during the lesson, they will be finding out more about proper nouns and how to use them in sentences.
Lesson Outline (30 minutes):
• Discuss the concept of common and proper nouns (15 minutes).
• Introduce examples of proper nouns (7 minutes).
• Identify proper nouns in examples (3 minutes).
• Create a sentence using a proper noun (5 minutes).
Questioning/Discussion (15 minutes):
• Ask students to share words/examples they know that fit into the categories of people, places and things.
• Ask them to share examples of people, places and things they know of and to identify whether they are common nouns or proper nouns.
Assessment (5 minutes):
• Hand out worksheets with examples of common and proper nouns and allow students to identify them individually.
Differentiation (5 minutes):
• Provide extra support for those that require it, such as explanation of words and idea sharing.
• Provide more challenge by asking the students to create a sentence using one of the proper nouns they have identified.
Plenary (5 minutes):
• Recap on the lesson and allow students to ask any further questions they may have.
