Introduction
Tell the students that they are going to learn all about proper nouns and why we use them in sentences. Explain that a proper noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea and that it always needs to be capitalized.
Lesson Outline
-
Introduce the concept of proper nouns with a worksheet or game (see resources below).
-
Explain what kinds of words are proper nouns. Give examples and have the students give their own examples.
-
Use a video resource (see links below) to explain the concept and to review examples.
-
Have the students complete a worksheet practice worksheet (see resources below).
-
Discuss the proper nouns they used in their sentences and any variations they can come up with.
Questioning
Ask questions throughout to help the students understand the concept and get them thinking about proper nouns.
- What is a proper noun?
- What kinds of words are proper nouns?
- Where do you find proper nouns in a sentence?
- Can you give me an example of a proper noun?
Assessment
Give the students the practice worksheet to assess their understanding of the lesson.
Differentiation
For students who don’t understand the concept, provide additional support by breaking down the concept into smaller parts and providing extra examples. For students who are ready for more challenging work, assign more difficult practice worksheets.
Plenary
Have the students explain the concept of proper nouns to the rest of the class and then have the entire class practice writing sentences using proper nouns.
