Introduction

Good morning class! Today we are going to learn about proper nouns. Do you know what a proper noun is?

A proper noun is the name of a particular person, place, thing or idea. It always starts with a capital letter. For example, Bob, London, computer and Christmas.

Let’s watch this short video to learn more about proper nouns.

Lesson Outline

  1. Explain the definition of a proper noun.

  2. Identify proper nouns in a sentence.

  3. Practice using proper nouns in sentences.

  4. Work through a worksheet about proper nouns.

Questioning

To ensure understanding throughout the lesson, ask the following questions:

  1. What is a proper noun?
  2. Can you give me an example of a proper noun?
  3. Why are proper nouns capitalised?
  4. How can you identify a proper noun in a sentence?

Assessment

To assess the children’s understanding, give them a worksheet that asks them to identify proper nouns in sentences and write some sentences using proper nouns. The worksheet can be found here - https://www.worksheetworks.com/english/grammar/proper-nouns.html

Differentiation

To cater for the different abilities in the class, offer an easier worksheet for those that need extra support and a harder version for those who have grasped the concept.

Plenary

Ask the class to summarise what they have just learnt about proper nouns. Get them to tell each other some facts and examples of proper nouns. Encourage them to use as many of their own sentences as they can.
