Introduction (5 minutes):
Introduce the concept of proper nouns to the students. Explain to them that proper nouns are used to describe specific people, places, and things (i.e. Mom, Mark, New York City, the Eiffel Tower). Ask the class how they use proper nouns in their everyday lives, and how they help us communicate. Show the students some examples on the board to help them understand the concept.

Lesson Outline (30 minutes):
• Have the students practice wrong and right sentences by circling the ones that have proper nouns.
Worksheet Resources:
• Printable Worksheet - https://education.com/worksheet/article/proper-noun-sentence-scramble/
• Online Activity - https://www.turtlediary.com/game/nouns-using-proper-nouns.html
• Have the students brainstorm as many proper nouns as they can in a set amount of time (e.g. five minutes). • Have the students sort proper nouns into different categories (e.g. people, places, things).
• Have the students play a word chain game - each student must start the chain with a proper noun and the next student must build off of the previous person’s proper noun to create a chain. (e.g. Brad - Brad Pitt - Pittsburg - Pittsburgh Pirates - Pirates of the Caribbean).
Questioning (10 minutes):
• After the activities, ask the class questions to assess their understanding of proper nouns. Examples include: Can you name a proper noun that describes a person? Can you name a proper noun that describes a place? What is the difference between a common noun and a proper noun?
Assessment (5 minutes):
• Give the students a quiz on proper nouns. This can be an open-book quiz or an oral quiz depending on the class’s ability level.
Differentiation (5 minutes):
• Adjust instruction to accommodate all learning levels. For students who need further assistance, give them extra examples to practice with. For advanced students, challenge them with more difficult examples or with a set amount of time to complete the activities.
Plenary (5 minutes):
• Review the concepts of proper nouns with the class, asking them questions to check for understanding. Have them give you examples of proper nouns that describe people, places, and things.
• Give the students a homework assignment to practice using proper nouns in their written work.
