Introduction:
Start the lesson by explaining what proper nouns are and how they are different from common nouns. Introduce the definition of “proper noun” which is a specific name of a person, place, or thing (e.g. Margaret, Singapore, apple). Ask the class if they can think of any proper nouns, and write them down on the board.
Lesson Outline:
• Discuss further about proper nouns, for example differentiate between proper nouns and common nouns, and discuss how proper nouns can include names of cities and states, people, days of the week and months of the year.
• Introduce the different types of proper nouns, such as: *Names of people *Names of places *Days of the week *Organization or business names • Encourage the students to think of their own examples, or provide examples of each. • Ask the students to identify and sort examples of proper nouns and common nouns.
Questioning:
• Use open-ended questions to prompt further discussion, such as “What other types of proper nouns can you think of?” • Use reference questions to ensure progress, for example “Which type of proper nouns include days of the week?”
Assessment:
• Possible assessment could include giving each student a worksheet with a list of words and asking them to identify which words are proper nouns and which are not. • The worksheet could include different types of proper nouns to test their knowledge, for example names of people, places, brands, companies, days of the week, months, etc.
Differentiation:
• For struggling students have the list of words written on the board with two columns, one for proper nouns and another for common nouns, and have them attempt to sort the words into the correct columns. • For advanced students, provide longer lists of words or words that are more difficult to identify as either proper nouns or common nouns, such as geographical names or brand names.
Plenary:
• Ask the students to come up with some of their own examples of proper nouns, and discuss how they can identify them.
