Introduction (5-7 mins): Welcome the children: Introduce the concept of proper nouns. Begin by asking the class to help you name some people, places and things they know in the world. Ask the class if they can observe something similar in all of the words they named. Help them understand that all of the words they named belong to a specific thing or person and each one starts with a capital letter. Explain that a proper noun is the name given to a specific person, place or thing.

Lesson Outline (35-45 mins): Show the students a few examples of proper nouns in a sentence and help them identify the proper nouns by reading the sentences aloud.

Next, show the students a video on proper nouns (link to video resource: https://education.abcmouse.com/reading-curriculum/lessons/grammar/what-is-a-proper-noun/). Ask them to pay attention to the examples given and help them list down any questions they may have.

After watching the video, get the students to complete a worksheet on identifying proper nouns (link to worksheet resource: https://www.superteacherworksheets.com/grammar/proper-nouns-mv.pdf). Provide assistance when needed and ask if they are able to identify any common patterns or rules as they complete the worksheet.

Questioning (14-15 mins): Observe the activity and ask the class questions about the proper nouns given in the worksheet. Ask them questions about why certain words are proper nouns and why certain words aren’t. Ask them to explain the similarities between the proper nouns they found.

Assessment (5-7 mins): Write a few sentences on the board and ask the students to identify the proper nouns in each sentence. Ask them to explain why they are proper nouns and help reinforce the knowledge they have learnt.

Differentiation: Encourage students that need more help to work in pairs or small groups. Give them some extra worksheets (https://www.teachthis.com.au/proper-nouns-questions-worksheet) to help them identify proper nouns and practice writing their own sentences.

Plenary (3-5 mins): Review the topics covered in the lesson. Ask the students to come up with a sentence using a proper noun. Ask the class what they have learnt about proper nouns today.
