Introduction (5 minutes):

Start by introducing the lesson idea, what a noun is and what a proper noun is. Introduce the topic of proper nouns by asking the children a question to focus their minds, e.g. “Has anyone ever heard of a proper noun before? What do you think it is?”. Let the children discuss amongst themselves what they think it is, and then explain what a proper noun is.

Lesson Outline (25 minutes):

Introduce the idea of proper nouns again, and explain why they are special. Ask the children to identify and discuss proper nouns in their vocabulary. Next, show the children some examples of proper nouns on the board and see if they can identify them. You could also use some online resources, such as a video about proper nouns, for them to watch.

Once the children have a good understanding of proper nouns, it is time to move onto the activity. Give them some worksheets or other activities that ask them to spot, identify and/or sort different proper nouns. This will help them to become better at spotting proper nouns in the future.

Questioning (5-10 minutes):

Throughout the lesson encourage the children to ask questions about the topic, and help them to answer those questions. This will allow the children to apply their knowledge and consolidate their understanding.

Assessment (5 minutes):

At the end of the lesson, use questioning to see how well the children understand the topic of proper nouns. You can do this by asking them to identify or sort some proper nouns, or ask them to explain the differences between proper nouns and other nouns.

Differentiation (5 minutes):

Differentiate the activity according to the different abilities of the children. Give the higher-ability children harder activities, and the lower-ability children simpler activities. This will ensure that everyone can participate and make progress.

Plenary (5 minutes):

Ask the children to share something they have learnt in the lesson and discuss appropriate examples of proper nouns. Summarise the key points of the lesson that they need to remember and recap the different types of proper nouns.
