Introduction
Welcome the class, introduce your name and make sure the children remember it. Give a brief overview of what the lesson topic is going to be about and then ask the children if they already know something about proper nouns.
Lesson Outline
- Explain what proper nouns are: Nouns that refer to specific people, places or things.
- Provide examples of proper nouns: London, Mary, Monday etc.
- Discuss the characteristics of a proper noun:
- A proper noun is always written with a capital letter
- A proper noun is specific and usually refers to someone or something that is unique
- Proper nouns can be the names of people, places and things
- Show the students how to correctly identify and write proper nouns with activities (see resources below):
- Use worksheets to give children the opportunity to write and identify proper nouns.

Throughout this lesson, ask the class open and closed questions to encourage their understanding of the concept and to monitor their level of engagement: - What is a proper noun? - Can you think of any proper nouns? - What are the characteristics of a proper noun? - How can we tell the difference between a proper noun and a regular noun?
Assessment
This lesson should be assessed mainly through observation. Observe the children’s level of understanding and make sure they understand the concept before moving on. Additionally, ask the children to come up with examples of proper nouns and to identify proper nouns in a text.
Differentiation
This lesson could be differentiated in a variety of ways: - Introducing the concept through video or song (see resources below). - Providing a range of worksheets allowing students to work at their own pace depending on their abilities. - For lower ability students, provide basic, scaffolded worksheets. - For higher ability students, provide more challenging, open-ended worksheets. - Offering extra activities and challenges to the more able students.

To conclude the lesson, assess the children’s learning by asking them to provide examples of proper nouns, discuss what proper nouns are and how to identify them.
