Introduction:

Today we are going to be learning about Proper Nouns. Proper nouns are capitalized words that are specific and have a clear meaning that usually refers to a person, place, thing or idea. We use proper nouns when we need to be specific. For example, the proper nouns for the phrase “kind of fruit” are “Apple.” Can anyone give me another example of a proper noun? (Allow discussion).

Lesson Outline:

• Introduction • Defining proper nouns • Rules for using capitalize nouns • Practice using proper nouns • Differentiating proper nouns from common nouns • Assessment • Discussing the importance of proper nouns • Conclusion

Questioning:

• What is a proper noun? • What is the difference between a proper noun and a common noun? • How do we use proper nouns in a sentence? • Can anyone give me an example of a proper noun?

Assessment: To assess students’ understanding of proper nouns, have students write a few sentences incorporating proper nouns into them.

Differentiation:

For students who struggle with identifying proper nouns, provide some relevant worksheets to practice with. For students who are more advanced, provide them with challenging sentences or paragraphs that require identifying proper nouns.

Plenary:

Link up some fun video resources like BrainPOP’s “Proper Nouns” video to the lesson [https://www.brainpop.com/language/grammar/propernouns/] Ask if anyone would like to summarize what they have learnt about proper nouns today. Also provide them with a linguistically advanced quiz that specifically tests on the use of proper nouns.
