Introduction

Today we are going to be learning about a very important type of word – Proper Nouns! A proper noun is the name of a person, place, or thing. It is usually capitalised, so it looks a bit different to other nouns.

Lesson Outline

• Explain what a Proper Noun is Let the children know that a proper noun is the name of a person, place, or thing, and it is usually capitalised. • Show a list of examples Show the children a list of proper nouns and explain to them why each word is a proper noun. • Play a game Play a game where the children have to sort a list of words into proper nouns and common nouns. Encourage them to explain why each word fits into each category. • Watch a video Show the children this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKM-HVVDzKs) on proper nouns and encourage them to identify proper nouns that they see and hear.

Questioning

• Ask questions throughout the lesson to check understanding Through the lesson, ask the children questions such as “What is a proper noun?”, “What words usually get capitalised?”, “Can you think of any proper nouns?”

Assessment

• Worksheet Give the children a worksheet (https://www.education.com/worksheet/article/proper-nouns/) to complete where they have to identify the proper nouns in a sentence and then write their own sentence using a proper noun.

Differentiation

• For more able children For more able children, challenge them to put the proper nouns into alphabetical order and to find a dictionary definition for them.

Plenary

• Recap Ask the children to share some of the proper nouns they have identified and explain why they are proper nouns. This will help to reinforce their understanding of the lesson.
