Introduction:
For this lesson, we will be talking about a type of word called proper nouns. They are special words that name specific people, places, days, and things! Let’s all get up and stretch our bodies out, so we can all get ready to learn about these words together!
Lesson Outline:
- Introduction to the concept of proper nouns (5 minutes) -Discuss what a proper noun is -Go through examples of what a proper noun can be
- Learning activities (20 minutes) -Play a proper noun matching game as a class -Use cards/material to match a capitalized word to its meaning -Let students create sentences with proper nouns -Use specific examples from their everyday lives to make it relatable -Brainstorm activity to group words into proper nouns or regular nouns
- Assessment (10 minutes) - Provide a quiz or worksheet for students to assess their understanding of the concept -Check for understanding with teacher questioning
- Differentiation -Provide visual representations (including pictures) to help explain words - Offer sentence starters and provide sentence examples as needed - Use more visual activities/games/material to differentiate for EAL learners
- Plenary (5 minutes) - Summarize the lesson objectives - Relate the application of Proper Nouns in writing and everyday life - Have a class discussion on their favorite proper nouns
