Introduction:

Welcome Primary 3 class! Today we are going to focus on proper nouns and how they are different from other nouns. Does anyone know what a noun is? (Let students answer.) Good job! A noun is a word that describes a person, place, thing, or idea.

Lesson Outline:

To begin, we should go over the definition of a proper noun. A proper noun is a specific, one-of-a-kind noun that begins with a capital letter. (Give examples such as countries, cities, people’s names, and companies).

Next, let’s watch this short video about proper nouns and how they are used. (Provide link to video.)

Once you’ve watched the video, we can practice identifying proper nouns with this worksheet (Provide link to worksheet). Split the class into two teams for a proper noun game. Give each team a list of sentences. The team must come up with the proper nouns in each sentence and write them down. The team that finishes first wins!

After the game, each group should pick one example of a proper noun and explain why it’s a proper noun and why it deserves a capital letter.

Questioning:

Allow time for questions throughout the lesson. Have the students restate their questions and discuss them as a class afterwards.

Assessment:

Assess student’s understanding of proper nouns with the game, along with the written and verbal explanations.

Differentiation:

Provide some visual support to the students who need it with a basic writing worksheet (Provide link to worksheet) that offers visuals and simple writing activities to supplement the game.

Plenary:

Review the important points from today’s lesson. How is a proper noun different from other nouns? What does it begin with? Give a few examples of proper nouns to review. Great job today, everyone!
