Lesson Outline:
- Discuss what proper nouns are.
- Practice recognizing proper nouns in a sentence by giving examples.
- Introduce worksheet activity and assign.
- View clip from Grammaropolis (www.grammaropolis.com) to reinforce knowledge.
- Introduce assessment activity.
- Review lesson and discuss answers to assessment.
Questioning:
- What is a proper noun? (A proper noun is a name that names a person, place, or thing.)
- Can you give me an example of a proper noun? (Examples might include: John, England, Apple)
Assessment:
Have the students complete the worksheet activity (http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plan/proper-noun-identification-worksheet) and then choose four of their sentences to write on the board.
Differentiation:
For students that need more help, assign a partner where one student reads aloud and the other points out the proper nouns. Give additional examples of proper nouns to help students differentiate from common nouns.
Plenary:
To review, proper nouns are special words which name people, places, and things. Ask the students to name a few proper nouns that they already know. Then, explain how proper nouns always have capital letters at the beginning. Encourage the students to continue practicing identifying proper nouns in their daily activities.
