Introduction (5 minutes)
Begin the lesson by introducing the concept of proper nouns. Begin by asking the children what they think a noun is, and introduce proper nouns as a specific type of noun. Explain that proper nouns refer to either the name of a person, place, or thing, and that they must start with a capital letter.
You may want to provide the children with an example - a proper noun like John, or Paris - to help them understand the definition.

Lesson Outline (15 minutes)
Next, ask the children to identify the nouns in given examples. Ensure they understand that the nouns they identify start with a capital letter and are very specific.
In addition, hand out a worksheet that has nouns that have been grouped as either common or proper nouns. Have the children complete the worksheet together as a classroom activity.
Questioning (5 minutes)
After completing the worksheet, it would be beneficial to have the children explain their reasoning to identify each noun as either proper or common. This will test their understanding of the concept and ensure they are understanding the lesson.
Assessment (5 minutes)
Also, ask the children to create sentences using some of the proper nouns they identified in the worksheet.
Differentiation (3 minutes)
In terms of differentiation for this lesson, you may wish to provide some more examples for the more advanced children that are more challenging to identify as proper nouns.
Plenary (3 minutes)
To conclude the lesson, ask the children to explain again what a proper noun is and why it starts with a capital letter.
