Introduction (5 minutes):
Explain to the children that they will be learning about a new type of noun. Ask the children if they know what a noun is, then explain that a noun is a person, place or thing. Introduce the concept of proper nouns, which are a type of noun that names a specific person, place, thing or idea (provide examples). Ask the children to name as many proper nouns as they can, and write them on the board.
Lesson Outline (30 minutes):
Explain that proper nouns should always begin with a capital letter, and clarify what this means (show some examples). Show the children this video on proper nouns (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVPS2KauJJU). Get the children to research proper nouns in the dictionary, and explain that you can use the dictionary to find the meaning of any word and count the number of letters in a word.
Divide the class into groups, and provide each group with a worksheet on proper nouns (https://worksheets.theteacherscorner.net/make-your-own/proper-nouns.php). Ask the children to look through each sentence on the worksheet and identify the proper nouns. Go around each group to check the answers.
Questioning (10 minutes):
Engage the children in a discussion about proper nouns. Ask questions such as “Where do proper nouns usually appear in a sentence?”, “Are all proper nouns capitalised?”, and “What is the difference between a proper noun and a common noun?”
Assessment (5 minutes):
Give each child a worksheet on proper nouns to complete (https://www.havefunteaching.com/worksheets/grammar-worksheets/proper-nouns-worksheet/). As the children are completing their worksheets, go around the class to assess their understanding of the lesson.
Differentiation:
Provide the higher-ability children with an extra challenging worksheet (https://www.allkidsnetwork.com/worksheets/grammar/nouns/kinds-of-nouns/proper-nouns-practice.pdf), while providing the lower-ability children with an easier worksheet (https://worksheets.theteacherscorner.net/make-your-own/proper-nouns.php).
Plenary (5 minutes):
Get the children to create a list of 10 proper nouns from the lesson, and write them down on the board. Ask the children what they have learned in the lesson, and elicit some answers. Summarise the lesson by explaining that proper nouns are nouns that refer to a specific person, place, thing or idea, and they should always begin with a capital letter.
