Introduction:

Today, class, we are going to be learning about proper nouns! A proper noun is a noun that refers to a specific person, place, or thing. They are usually capitalized because they refer to a particular thing instead of a generic thing. Can anyone give me an example of a proper noun?

[Allow for student answers. If necessary, prompt with additional examples such as a name (John), a street address (24 Fifth Avenue), a title (President Obama), a month (June), a holiday (Thanksgiving)]

Lesson Outline:

  1. Introduce what a proper noun is.

  2. Brainstorm proper nouns together as a class.

  3. Use the white board to practice writing sentences with proper nouns.

  4. Introduce worksheets or videos (links below) to review proper nouns with the class.

• Worksheet: http://www.education.com/worksheet/article/proper-nouns/

• Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GslHUBYpYI

  1. Assess student understanding through workbook activities.

Questioning:

• What is a proper noun?

• Can you name an example of a proper noun?

• When do we use a capital letter when writing a proper noun?

Assessment:

• Have students complete worksheet to assess understanding.

• Ask students to come up with proper nouns for different categories such as people, places and things.

Differentiation:

• For lower ability students, provide extra worksheets and videos to help review.

• For higher ability students, have them create sentences using proper nouns.

Plenary:

Discuss as a class what we have learned about proper nouns today. Ask students more questions to assess their understanding such as writing a sentence using a proper noun.
