Introduction:
Introduce the concept of nouns and explain how they are a type of word used to name people, places, things, and ideas. Explain that the letters of a noun normally begin with a capital letter. Introduce the concept of proper nouns and explain that these are specific names for people, places, and things (e.g. Grandma, London, Harry Potter).
Lesson Outline:
-
Discuss the similarities and differences between nouns and proper nouns. Play a game of Hangman or Pictionary to help develop the children’s understanding.
-
Explain the rule for capitalizing proper nouns. Ask the children to work together to identify the proper nouns in short texts and discuss which words should have a capital letter.
-
Introduce the concept of possessive nouns. Explain that a possessive noun shows ownership. Show examples of different ways possessive nouns can be formed (e.g. car’s, John’s, children’s).
-
Work in pairs to identify possessive nouns in a range of texts. Ask each pair to come up with an example of a possessive noun.
-
Ask the children to work together to create a list of all the people, places, and things they can think of (e.g. grandmother, swimming pool, school bus). Ask them to note which words should be a proper nouns (and hence capitalized).
Assessment:
Observe the children throughout the lesson to assess their level of understanding. Use questioning during group discussions and individual activities to learn about their knowledge. Circulate around the room to answer questions and offer help where appropriate.
Differentiation:
Provide support and scaffolding for those who need it. Offer visual and auditory activities for different learning styles. Provide extra activities for those who finish their work earlier.
Plenary:
Invite the children to share their lists of proper nouns and discuss why it was important to capitalize the names. Rewatch the videos and recap the key points of the lesson.
