Introduction (2-3 minutes): Start the lesson by introducing yourself and welcoming the children. Explain to them what a proper noun is: a proper noun is a specific person, place, or thing, and it always has the first letter capitalized. Introduce examples of proper nouns, such as BMW (title of a car brand) and the Amazon (a river).
Lesson Outline (10 minutes):
-Explain why proper nouns are capitalized (e.g. because they are the name of a specific person, place, or thing). -Discuss further examples of proper nouns, such as Rio de Janeiro (place) and Michael Jordan (person). -Explore activities related to proper nouns, such as writing or listing out proper nouns. -Distribute worksheets about proper nouns (see resources for example worksheets).
Questioning (5 minutes):
Engage the students with questions about proper nouns. Examples of questions include: -Can you give me an example of a proper noun? -What things can be proper nouns? -Why do proper nouns have capital letters?
Assessment (2 minutes):
Give the students a quiz which assesses their understanding of proper nouns. Alternatively, assess their understanding by asking follow-up questions.
Differentiation (3 minutes):
Identify students who need further guidance and provide them with extra instruction or activities. For example, you can provide students who need additional support with a worksheet that has fewer examples of proper nouns.
Plenary (2-3 minutes):
Summarise the lesson’s key points, provide any additional information, and review the children’s knowledge.
