Introduction:

Welcome class! Today we are going to talk about a very important English topic: proper nouns. Before we start, let’s review nouns – nouns are words that name a person, place, thing, or idea.

Lesson Outline:

  1. What is a proper noun? Explain that a proper noun is a special type of noun which names a specific person, place, organization, or thing. Show examples (whole class discussion).

  2. Practice activity: Have students take turns naming proper nouns. Provide examples if necessary.

  3. Introduce proper nouns components (adjectives, titles, names). Explain how each of these components plays a role in forming a proper noun.

  4. Group activity: Have students work in groups of two or three to create lists of proper nouns that includes adjectives, titles, and names.

  5. Introduce capitalization rules and practice activity: Have students identify proper nouns that need to be capitalized in a given sentence.

Questions:

  1. Can you explain what a proper noun is?

  2. Can you give an example of a proper noun?

  3. What are the components of a proper noun?

  4. What are the rules for capitalizing proper nouns?

Assessment:

Assess students’ understanding by having them identify proper nouns in sample sentences and correctly capitalize them.

Differentiation:

For struggling learners, provide sample sentences that include proper nouns so they can practice identifying and capitalizing them.

For advanced learners, provide a longer sample sentence with more proper nouns for them to identify and capitalize.

Plenary:

Review the lesson material and emphasize the importance of properly using proper nouns.
