Introduction: Ask the students if they know what a proper noun is. Tell them they will learn what it is and how they can use it in their writing.
Lesson Outline: - Explain what a proper noun is (A proper noun is a name that is given to a specific or particular person, group of people, or things, such as names of cities, countries, months, days, etc. It is always spelt with a capital letter). - Have the pupils watch this YouTube video about proper nouns: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7OZeEVM6DI - Give the students a worksheet to complete to reinforce their understanding. For example, this one from Twinkl: https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-l-5318-proper-nouns-activity-sheet - Ask each student to think of a proper noun to share with the class.
Questioning: - Ask the students if they understand what a proper noun is. - Ask ‘Can anyone name a proper noun?’ - Ask ‘What other words do we spell with a capital letter?’
Assessment: Check how well the students understood the content of the lesson by asking them to identify proper nouns in a given sentence.
Differentiation: Provide extension activities for more able writers, such as writing a story which incorporates at least five different proper nouns.
Plenary: Summarise what they have learned, and ask them to explain in their own words what a proper noun is.
Remind them that proper nouns are spelt using a capital letter and ask what other words are spelt with a capital letter.
