Introduction:

Begin the lesson by introducing proper nouns and why it’s important to understand what they are and how to use them. Ask students why knowing the difference between a common noun and a proper noun is important (e.g. for specificity in writing). Introduce the concept with a video and/or visual examples.

Lesson Outline:

  1. Explain the definition of a proper noun - a proper noun is a specific name for a person, place, thing or idea.

  2. Discuss examples of proper nouns and highlight how they differ from common nouns.

  3. Introduce rules for capitalization of proper nouns, such as nouns that are the name of places, people, things and titles.

  4. Provide guided practice where students create proper nouns.

  5. Introduce a worksheet activity where students fill in blanks with the correct capitalized word.

  6. Discuss strategies for identifying proper nouns.

Questioning:

-What is the difference between a common noun and a proper noun? -How do you know when to use capitalization for proper nouns? -What strategies can you use to identify proper nouns?

Assessment:

Assess student understanding through exit tickets, or quick written quizzes. Ask students to identify and explain the difference between common and proper nouns, and write out examples of both.

Differentiation:

To differentiate, provide a range of activities that focus on different aspects of proper nouns. Additionally, break students into small groups for work on the worksheet activities.

Plenary:

At the end of the lesson, bring the class back together to discuss proper nouns. Ask students questions to assess understanding, such as what proper nouns are, how they are different from common nouns and rules of capitalization. Discuss strategies for identifying proper nouns.
