Introduction: Introduce the lesson by talking about why proper nouns are important. Explain that proper nouns help to give things distinctive identities. Ask the students if they can think of some examples of proper nouns (people, places, etc).
Lesson Outline: - Review the difference between common and proper nouns - Use a visual aid to help explain what a proper noun is and how to identify them (e.g. a slide/PPT/whiteboard) - Have a discussion about what makes a proper noun - Give examples of proper nouns and ask the student to identify them - Ask the students to come up with their own examples of proper nouns - Ask the students to identify a few proper nouns from a text
Questioning: - Ask the students questions about what makes a proper noun - Ask the students to identify proper nouns within text - Ask the students to come up with their own lists of proper nouns
Assessment: - Ask the students to provide further examples of proper nouns - Provide a writing activity and/or worksheet in which the students identify and provide examples of proper nouns
Differentiation: - Allow the students to practice identifying proper nouns through a variety of activities, such as an online quiz or game - Create different versions of the worksheets, where the proper nouns become progressively harder to identify
Plenary: - Ask each student to name a few of their favourite proper nouns - Give suggestions as to how the student can continue to practice recognizing proper nouns
