Lesson Plan: Teaching Letters Q, R, S, and T

Objective: - To teach primary 3 children the names and sounds of letters Q, R, S, and T. - To provide opportunities for students to practice saying the names and sounds of the letters. - To reinforce previous letters A-P and their corresponding sounds. - To teach students how to form each letter correctly.

Materials: - Letter worksheets for Q, R, S, and T - Alphabet song - Rhyme cards for Q, R, S, and T - Whiteboard or chart paper - Markers - Pencils - Homework sheets

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes): - Greet the students and review the previous letters A-P. - Explain that today, we will be learning about four new letters: Q, R, S, and T. - Show the letter cards for Q, R, S, and T and ask the students if they know any words that start with these letters.

  2. Teach the names and sounds of letters Q, R, S, and T (10 minutes): - Write each letter on the whiteboard or chart paper. - Introduce the words and sounds associated with each letter: - Q is for “queen” /kw/ - R is for “robot” /r/ - S is for “snake” /s/ - T is for “tiger” /t/ - Have the students repeat the names and sounds of each letter chorally and individually.

  3. Alphabet song and rhyme (10 minutes): - Play an alphabet song that includes the letters Q, R, S, and T. - Read a short rhyme for each letter, emphasizing the sound and the word associated with it. - E.g. Q for Quincy, wearing a crown. R for Rose, riding her bike. S for Sammy, slithering slowly. T for Timmy, tip-toeing past. - Have the students repeat each rhyme after you.

  4. Review previous letters A-P (5 minutes): - Ask the students to say the names, sounds, and examples of the letters A-P. - Provide prompts if needed.

  5. Demonstrate letter formation (10 minutes): - Show the students how to form each letter correctly, including the proper stroke sequence and direction. - Model writing each letter on the whiteboard or chart paper. - Have the students practice air writing the letters with their fingers.

  6. Letter tracing activity (15 minutes): - Distribute the letter worksheets for Q, R, S, and T. - Instruct the students to trace the dotted letter outlines while saying the letter name and sound. - Monitor the students’ progress and provide feedback and assistance as needed.

  7. Homework assignment (5 minutes): - Assign the first part of the homework, which is to complete the letter tracing worksheets for Q, R, S, and T. - Remind the students to say the letter name and sound as they trace each letter. - Collect the completed worksheets at the beginning of the next class.

  8. Conclusion (5 minutes): - Recap the letters Q, R, S, and T and their corresponding sounds. - Encourage the students to practice saying the names and sounds of the letters at home. - Thank the students for their participation and effort.
