Introduction:
Welcome to today’s lesson about proper nouns! Before we start, do any of you know what a proper noun is? Let’s start by introducing the topic and give a few examples.
A proper noun is the name given to a particular person, place, or thing. For example, my name is Ms. Taylor, the United States is a country, and a dog is an animal. All of these are examples of proper nouns.
Lesson Outline:
- Introduce the concept of proper nouns (5 minutes)
- Go through examples of proper nouns individually, asking students to identify them as proper nouns (5 minutes)
- In small groups, students list as many proper nouns using the sentence starter provided (20 minutes)
- Discuss some of the proper nouns in the groups and review the concept of proper nouns (10 minutes)
- Watch a video and discuss (5 minutes)
- Create a bulletin board display of proper nouns (15 minutes)
Questioning:
We will be doing a lot of group work during this lesson, so I will be looking at each group to ask prompts and questions to further their understanding.
Examples of questions include:
- What is a proper noun?
- Can you think of an example of a proper noun?
- What are some other proper nouns you can think of?
Assessment:
I will be assessing the students’ understanding of proper nouns with a few questions at the end of the lesson. I will also be looking at the bulletin boards they create to see if they have used a variety of proper nouns.
Differentiation:
For students who are having a hard time understanding proper nouns, I will provide worksheets and graphic organizers that they can work through. I will also provide individual attention and allow them to work separately if needed.
For students who need more of a challenge, I will provide more complex proper nouns to work with and will extend their list of proper nouns.
Plenary:
To end the lesson, I will go through the questions I gave at the end of the lesson to assess their understanding and we will also review what we have learnt.
