Introduction
To begin, explain to the children what a proper noun is:
A proper noun is a name that is given to particular people, places or things, and it is always written with a capital letter. Examples would be:
-names (John, Mary) -places (London, Paris) -things (The Eiffel Tower, The Empire State Building)
Lesson Outline
- Introduce the concept of proper nouns
- Show the children an example of a proper noun
- Use laminated examples of proper nouns to teach the children what they look like

- Show the children some of the worksheets related to proper nouns. (You can find some examples here: http://goo.gl/8ItSwW)
- Let the children practice writing and spotting proper nouns
- Ask the children to work in small groups to complete the worksheets
Questioning
- To test the children’s understanding of the concept, ask the question: What is a proper noun?
- Ask each group to present their worksheets and their answers to the questions
Assessment
- Assess each child’s understanding of the concept via the questioning
- Ask the children to complete a spot-the-proper-noun worksheet.
Differentiation
-Provide some of the children with easier worksheets and more difficult ones to the others. -If needed, provide some children with an extra explanation of the concept.
Plenary
- Ask the children to explain in their own words what a proper noun is
- Ask the children to write a sentence with a proper noun
- Summarize the lesson by revisiting the definition of a proper noun.
