Introduction

To begin, explain to the children what a proper noun is:

A proper noun is a name that is given to particular people, places or things, and it is always written with a capital letter. Examples would be:

-names (John, Mary) -places (London, Paris) -things (The Eiffel Tower, The Empire State Building)

Lesson Outline

  1. Introduce the concept of proper nouns
  2. Show the children an example of a proper noun
  3. Use laminated examples of proper nouns to teach the children what they look like
  4. Watch this Youtube video that explains the concept of proper nouns: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSxjEzbohMo
  5. Show the children some of the worksheets related to proper nouns. (You can find some examples here: http://goo.gl/8ItSwW)
  6. Let the children practice writing and spotting proper nouns
  7. Ask the children to work in small groups to complete the worksheets

Questioning

  1. To test the children’s understanding of the concept, ask the question: What is a proper noun?
  2. Ask each group to present their worksheets and their answers to the questions

Assessment

  1. Assess each child’s understanding of the concept via the questioning
  2. Ask the children to complete a spot-the-proper-noun worksheet.

Differentiation

-Provide some of the children with easier worksheets and more difficult ones to the others. -If needed, provide some children with an extra explanation of the concept.

Plenary

  1. Ask the children to explain in their own words what a proper noun is
  2. Ask the children to write a sentence with a proper noun
  3. Summarize the lesson by revisiting the definition of a proper noun.
