Introduction:
Begin the lesson by asking the students what types of words exist in language. They will likely mention adjectives, verbs, adverbs and other common parts of speech. Explain to them that today’s lesson is going to focus on a special type of word called a proper noun.
Lesson Outline:
-
Define proper nouns: A proper noun is a special type of noun that refers to a particular person, place, thing, event or concept. Examples include: • Names of people: Chris, Mr. Johnson • Names of places: Berlin, USA • Names of companies: Microsoft, Toys-R-Us • Names of books, films and TV shows: The Cat in The Hat, Friends
-
Identifying Proper Nouns: Have the students help you find examples of proper nouns in a text. Explain to them that proper nouns are usually capitalized, which makes them easier to recognize. Ask the students to identify the proper nouns in the text, circle them, and read them aloud.
-
Brainstorm: Ask the students what they think a proper noun is and write these ideas on the board. Ask them to recognize which of their ideas are examples of proper nouns.
Questioning:
• What is a proper noun? • How are proper nouns capitalized? • What is an example of a proper noun? • How can we identify a proper noun in a text?
Assessment:
Throughout the lesson, observe the students’ progress and ask them questions to assess their understanding. Assign worksheets for the students to work on that focus on identifying different types of proper nouns, for example, names of people, places, companies and titles of books, films and TV shows.
Differentiation:
For students who are struggling, provide them with additional worksheets containing more examples of proper nouns. Give the students time to practice finding the answers before moving forward with the lesson.
Plenary:
Have the students come up with their own sentences using proper nouns and invite them to share them. Alternatively, watch this video about proper nouns: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bt_IIIlBIHk.
