Introduction: Today we will be looking at proper nouns, which are types of nouns that are specific and always begin with a capital letter.
Lesson outline:

Introduce students to the concept of proper nouns: a. Explain that proper nouns are specific nouns (names of people, places, things, and ideas) that always begin with a capital letter b. Provide examples to illustrate (i.e. Canada, Tuesday, Mr. Smith, FIFA) c. Ask students to provide examples, then create a class list.

Identify proper nouns within a piece of text: a. Provide a short text for students to read, then ask them to list out any proper nouns they find

Categorising proper nouns a. Explain that there are different types of proper nouns (people, places, things, etc) b. Ask students to sort the examples they previously identified into different categories
Questioning: a. During the introductory section, ask students to expand on the examples they provide b. During the identification section, use probing questions to help students think deeper. c. During the categorising section, ask students to explain why the items fall in each category.
Assessment: a. As students respond to questions, circulate around the room and note how well they understand the lesson. b. Ask them to write a sentence with a proper noun and review it for accuracy.
Differentiation: a. Provide an additional text for struggling students or modify the text for those needing more of a challenge b. Offer extra challenge activities for advanced students
Plenary: a. Ask some students to present the different types of proper nouns they identified. b. Summarise the key points of the lesson.
