Introduction
Begin the lesson by introducing yourself and welcoming the class. Greeting students by name helps create rapport and familiarity. Share with the students that you are going to teach them a fun new subject – proper nouns. Explain the concept and definition of proper nouns: “Proper nouns are names of a person, place, thing, or idea.” Ask the students to raise their hands if they can think of any other examples.
Lesson Outline
-
Go through a few examples on the board of proper nouns, as well as common and proper nouns.
-
Watch a short video on proper nouns, such as this quick explainer video: https://youtu.be/0tkTefMZjK8
-
Show the class a fun and interactive website all about proper nouns. For example: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/wordsandpictures/propernouns/game.shtml
-
Use a worksheet resource that allows the students to practice on their own or in pairs. For example: https://www.teachingresources.co.uk/proper-noun-worksheet/
Questioning
Throughout the lesson, encourage the students to ask questions and provide answers. As well, pause throughout the lesson to ask questions of the class. For example:
• “Can someone give me the definition of a proper noun?” • “Name one person, place, thing and idea that you know of.”
Assessment
At the end of the lesson, conduct a quick assessment by asking the students to show their knowledge on proper nouns. For example: “I’ll give you all a sheet of paper with a list of words. Please tell me whether each of them is a proper or common noun” Alternatively, provide a few sentences and the students must identify the proper nouns.
Differentiation
There are different ways to differentiate the lesson:
• Provide extra assistance to English language learners or struggling students • Offer more challenging activities to advanced students • Provide options in how the pupils complete their worksheets, as some may prefer writing while others may prefer drawing
Plenary
At the end of the lesson, provide a summary and review of the key learning points:
• “Proper nouns are names of a person, place, thing, or idea.” • “Common nouns are general nouns, like words for animals, places and objects.” • “Can you name a few examples of proper nouns?”
