Introduction: Welcome to Class! Today in English we are going to be learning about proper nouns. A proper noun is a type of noun that refers to a specific person, place, or thing.
Lesson Outline:
-Start with a video or a read aloud of a book that has some examples of proper nouns in it.
-Have students complete a worksheet where they can identify which words are proper nouns and which words are not proper nouns.
-Discuss as a class why the words are proper nouns, and why some words are not.
-Play a game: Give several proper nouns, and have the students guess what they are referring to (ex. Max – Who is this? Answer: Maximillian, a character from a popular children’s book).
-Do an activity (such as a memory game) to help students remember some of the words.
Questioning:
Include regular guided questions throughout the lesson to check student’s understanding and to move the discussion along.
Examples:
-What makes a word a proper noun?
-Can you give me an example of a proper noun?
-What made you decide that word was a proper noun?
Assessment:
Have students complete a pretest/post-test to assess how much information they retained from the lesson.
Differentiation:
Provide different types of resources for learning styles. This can include videos, auditory learning, visual aids, and hands-on activities.
Plenary:
Do a quick summary of the lesson and make sure students have a good understanding of the material.
