Introduction (5 minutes): Explain to the Primary 3 children that today’s lesson is going to be all about Proper Nouns. Introduce the definition of a Proper Noun (a Proper Noun is the special name given to a person, place, thing, idea or day). Ask them some questions to get them thinking, such as ‘Can you give me an example of a person’s proper noun?’, ‘What is the proper noun of the city you live in?’, and ‘What are some special days that you can think of?’

Lesson Outline (20 minutes): After introducing the definition of a Proper Noun, give the children 10 minutes to come up with as many Proper Nouns as they can, either individually or in groups.

Provide the children with some video examples of Proper Nouns using the following resources: - Educational videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuRm1gtqi-I - Silly Funny TV video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyJN5yJoC5Q

Organise an activity to decide whether words are Proper Nouns or Not. Have children work to decide in their group if a list of words are proper nouns. Encourage them to discuss and explain why the word is a proper noun, if they decide it is one.

Questioning (10 minutes): Test their knowledge on Proper Nouns with a quiz. Ask questions about their examples and the video resources.

Assessment (5 minutes): Give the children a worksheet to test their understanding and see how confident they are with identifying proper nouns. Worksheet Resource: - Thinkquest: https://web.archive.org/web/20110103064124/http://library.thinkquest.org/04apr/00520/Proper%20Nouns%20exercises.doc

Differentiation (3 minutes): Give children who are struggling, some more time to come up with their examples, do the worksheet, or provide them with guidance and support with the videos.

Plenary (2 minutes): At the end, ask the children some questions to summarise their learning. Ask, ‘What is a Proper Noun?’, ‘Can you give me an example of a Proper Noun?’, and ‘What activity did we do to help you learn?’ Make sure to give positive feedback to all the children for their efforts.
