Introduction:
In this lesson, we are going to be learning about Proper Nouns. Before we jump in, let’s review what a noun is. A noun is a person, place or thing. Now that we have that out of the way, let’s move on to proper nouns.

Defining proper nouns - Explain to students that a proper noun is a special type of noun that names something specific, like a person, place, or event. (3 minutes)
-
Examples of proper nouns - Give students some examples of proper nouns, such as countries, cities, buildings, sports teams, holidays, etc. Have students give some examples as well. (5 minutes)
-
Proper nouns and capitalization - Explain to students that proper nouns are always capitalized. Give students some examples of how a sentence looks when the proper nouns are correctly capitalized and how it looks if it’s not. (4 minutes)
-
Worksheet (10 minutes)
-
Video: Have students watch this video on Proper Nouns to reinforce their learning. (5 minutes)
Questioning:
Throughout the lesson, use questions to check for understanding. Ask students to explain the definition of a proper noun and give examples. Ask them what types of nouns are always capitalized.
Assessment:
At the conclusion of the lesson, give students a worksheet to complete that tests their understanding of proper nouns and how to correctly capitalize them.
Differentiation:
Set up the lesson for differentiated instruction. Make sure to provide visual and verbal cues. Provide options for hands-on activities, and differentiate the worksheet to meet individual learner’s needs.
Plenary:
End the lesson with a review of the main points. Have students provide examples of proper nouns and explain why they are capitalized.
