Introduction:
Welcome the students and explain that talking about proper nouns can help us speak and write in a more descriptive and engaging manner.
Lesson Outline:
Start with a warm-up question to get the students thinking, for example: “What is a word that can describe a person’s name?”
Show students a slide/article/video with examples of proper nouns and explain that these are special types of nouns that name particular people, places, and things. Some examples include the name of a specific person (e.g. John), place (e.g. India), organization (e.g. NASA), and brand (e.g. Apple).
Organize students into groups and provide each group with a worksheet, containing a list of nouns and proper nouns. Ask students to sort the list into regular and proper nouns.
Explain to the class that all proper nouns should start with a capital letter. Give some examples and ask students to come up with examples too.
Afterwards, ask students to work on one of the worksheets to practice identifying proper nouns.
Questioning:
In addition to the specific questions relating to the worksheet activities, ask open-ended questions to check the students’ understanding, such as:
• What can a proper noun be used to describe? • How do we know when to use a capital letter when writing a proper noun?
Assessment:
Collect the different worksheets from the students and review them for accuracy.
For a more formal assessment, you could also ask students to write out sentences that incorporate proper nouns.
Differentiation:
Ensure that activities are accessible for all students, regardless of ability. Provide extra support for weaker students and more challenging activities for more advanced students.
Plenary:
To finish the lesson, ask students to summarize what they have learned.
