Introduction (5 minutes): Primary 3 children are just starting to learn what a noun is and how it is used in language. It’s now time to introduce proper nouns. Explain that a proper noun is a type of noun that is used to name a specific place, person, thing or idea. Introduce the concept with a short video of how proper nouns work such as: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKbXl6RG2QQ
Lesson Outline (30 minutes): -Introduce the definitions of proper nouns (ex. What is a proper noun? A proper noun is a special type of noun that names a particular person, place or thing). - Show examples of proper nouns using flashcards which the children can raise their hands or call out the answers (ex. Apple, London, Hollywood). - Practice writing proper nouns, introducing capital letters and emphasizing the importance of accuracy in their writing. - Further consolidate the understanding of proper nouns by playing a game of matching the proper noun to its meaning (ex. Match the name to its description: John – a teacher) - Use worksheets to check understanding and provide further practice writing and using proper nouns (link to worksheet: https://www.teachstarter.com/au/resource/rewrite-with-proper-nouns-worksheet-worksheet/)
Questioning: - Throughout the lesson, ask questions related to the material being covered (ex. How do you know when a word should be capitalized?) - While the children are working through their worksheets, ask to check in with individual children to elicit their understanding (ex. Can you tell me what a proper noun is?)
Assessment: - Throughout the lesson, take periodic checks using a class discussion or simple questions to assess the children’s understanding of the material (ex. What is a proper noun?) -Ask each individual child to write one or two sentences that include a proper noun
Differentiation: - If some students are struggling, provide extra support in an individual setting or by breaking the class into smaller groups - For more advanced learners, provide an extension activity such as creating a word search or writing a descriptive passage with correct capitalization
Plenary (5 minutes): Discuss what they have learnt today, ask the students to recall the definition of proper nouns. Explain why it is important to be accurate when using proper nouns and why capital letters are often necessary.
