Introduction
Welcome students to the lesson! Today, you are going to learn all about proper nouns. Proper nouns are special words that name specific people, places, things, and ideas. They always begin with a capital letter!
Have you ever heard of the White House? This is an example of a proper noun. The White House is the name of a specific place in Washington DC.
Let’s get started learning about proper nouns!
Lesson Outline
-
Review what proper nouns are and why it’s important to capitalize them.
-
Talk about different types of proper nouns and give examples for each. • People (George Washington, Jennifer) • Places (Buckingham Palace, Central Park) • Organizations (Google, Apple) • Dates and Holidays (September 29th, Thanksgiving)
-
Practice identifying proper nouns. • Start with some examples, using a chart on a white board. • Move on to students participating in class to identify proper nouns in a text or a story.
4.Have students practice proper nouns in a writing exercise, either in pairs or individually. • Have students think of a place they would like to go and write four sentences using proper nouns to describe this place.
Questioning
• What are proper nouns? • Why do we use capital letters for proper nouns? • What type of proper noun is the word Disney Land? • What is the name of a specific person you know?
Assessment
Assess student understanding by having each student in the group complete a worksheet with 10 sentences written out. The sentences should contain proper nouns and should be spelled correctly and capitalized correctly as well.
Differentiation
For students who need extra help, provide them with a worksheet that focuses on identifying proper nouns, with examples of different types of proper nouns provided in it.
For students who need a challenge, have them answer more difficult questions and prompts. For example, have them create their own original story and identify the proper nouns in their story.
Plenary
For a plenary activity, have students work in pairs to create a presentation about their experience learning about proper nouns.
