Introduction:
Today we are going to learn about proper nouns. Proper nouns are the names of people, places, days, months and things. They always start with a capital letter to show that they have a special meaning.
Lesson Outline:
-
Ask the students to brainstorm some examples of proper nouns (e.g. Sarah, London, Monday).
-
Introduce proper nouns and explain how they are used.
-
Show a video about proper nouns (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yV7DEz3q13Y).
-
Give out a worksheet to complete (e.g. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Proper-Nouns-English-Grammar-Worksheets-4444548).
-
Guide the students through the worksheet and explain any mistakes or unclear points.
Questioning:
Throughout the lesson, ask questions to check the students’ understanding and encourage discussion. Examples of questions are:
• What is a proper noun?
• What words do we use to show that a proper noun is special?
• Can you give me an example of a proper noun?
• What is the name of the capital city of England?
• What are the 7 days of the week?
Assessment:
At the end of the lesson, assess the students’ understanding by asking them to write a sentence using 3 different proper nouns.
Differentiation:
• Give early finishers an extension activity to do (e.g. asking the students to come up with as many proper nouns as they can in 2 minutes).
• Those who need extra help or are struggling can be given extra worksheets and help.
Plenary:
At the end of the lesson, summarise the main points that have been learned. Then ask the students to share 3 proper nouns that they have learned today.
