Introduction: Today we’re going to talk about one of the most important topics when it comes to language - proper nouns! When we use proper nouns correctly, our writing and speech is much clearer, more organized, and more professional.
Lesson Outline: - What is a proper noun? - Give some examples of proper nouns, like - People: Tom, Jane – Places: Canada, Beijing – Organisations: Microsoft, Sony – Events: Olympic Games, World War - Capitalization rules for proper nouns - Explain what the capitalization rules are - Have the students follow along in the worksheets as you go through them (see resources below) - Have the students practice writing out proper nouns with the correct capitalization - Common mistakes with proper nouns - Some examples of common mistakes made with proper nouns - How to avoid these mistakes in future - Questions (see section below)
Questioning:
-What title(s) do you capitalize when writing the name of a person? -Name five places that are proper nouns. -What types of organisations are proper nouns? -Name three events that are proper nouns.
Assessment:
- Have the students take a quiz orally or on paper, asking them questions to assess their understanding of proper nouns, capitalization rules, and common mistakes to avoid.
Differentiation:
