Introduction: Greet the students and introduce the lesson by telling them a story. Explain that today they will be learning about something called a Proper Noun. Ask the children what they think a Proper Noun is and allow them to take guesses. Explain that Proper Nouns are names that are specific and that they can be used to name people, places and things.
Lesson Outline: - Explain that Proper Nouns always begin with Capital Letters. - Give examples of Proper Nouns and have the children repeat them back. - Ask the children if they know the names of their teachers, friends, parents and siblings. Explain that these are all examples of Proper Nouns. - Show the children this video about Proper Nouns: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oLLGt2-1t8 - Introduce the activity worksheet (available here: http://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/2/proper_nouns). - Give the children time to complete the worksheet.
Questioning: - Ask the children to explain to you what Proper Nouns are. - Ask the children to provide examples of Proper Nouns. - Ask the children if they can identify any Proper Nouns in the activity worksheet.
Assessment: Observe the children during the lesson to assess understanding. Use the activity worksheet to assess the children’s ability to identify and use Proper Nouns.
Differentiation: Allow extra time for those who may need more time to complete the activity worksheet. Allow those who have a better understanding of the concept to create their own sentences with Proper Nouns.
Plenary: Ask the children to each come up with three sentences that contain Proper Nouns. Discuss their sentences as a class. Ask the children to explain why the nouns in the sentences are Proper Nouns.
