Introduction:

Introduce yourself and class read aloud each student’s name.

Tell the class that they are going to be learning about proper nouns today, and what they mean. Read the definition of a proper noun aloud: ‘ A proper noun is a special name, usually beginning with a capital letter, for a person, place, or thing.’

Explain that proper nouns are important for writing, so it is a very important thing for them to learn about.

Lesson Outline:

  1. Brainstorming – Introduce the concept of proper nouns by having the students think of examples. Ask them to give examples of people, places and things they could use a proper noun to name. Have students write these down on a whiteboard or piece of paper.

  2. Learning - Explain to the students that all nouns that name specific people, places and things, and are written with a capital letter are called proper nouns, e.g. John, London, Big Ben. Ask them to name some other proper nouns and write them on the board.

  3. Video - Show a short video about proper nouns, such as: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4ce-BiCg8E

  4. Activity - Give out worksheets to the students and ask them to identify and circle the proper nouns from a list of words given, e.g. apple, Mr. Smith, Tuesday

  5. Discussion - Ask the students what they have noticed about proper nouns and have them explain why they think it is important to use them correctly.

Assessment:

Circulate around the class and assess the students as they are working on the worksheets. Ask each student individually to share their answer to the activity and explain why proper nouns are important.

Differentiation:

For students who are struggling with identifying proper nouns, provide a list of proper nouns to look at.

For students who are less advanced, give them simpler worksheets that deal with identifying proper nouns, such as: https://www.superteacherworksheets.com/nouns/proper-nouns-circle-underline_TDPBDR.pdf

For advanced students, provide more difficult worksheets that ask them to write proper nouns, such as: https://www.superteacherworksheets.com/proper-nouns/proper-nouns-write_TMPB3T.pdf

Plenary:

Ask the students to summarise briefly what they have learnt about proper nouns.

Also, ask the students to apply the knowledge they have learned by giving examples of proper nouns they might use when writing something.
