Introduction
Begin the lesson by writing Nouns on the board and ask your students if anyone can explain what it is. Once students have a shared understanding at the very basic level, then introduce the concept of proper nouns by using an example of a person’s name. Other examples can include a city, a school or a company.
Lesson Outline
- Use real world examples to explain the concept of proper nouns
- Instruct the students to come up with proper nouns they know
- Explain the qualities that make up a proper noun (starts with a capital letter, particular name used, not typically pluralised)
- Show the students how to use articles to describe a proper noun (e.g. He is from the United States)
- Show the students examples of common proper nouns
- Ask the students to give examples of proper nouns they know (e.g. India, Singapore, McDonalds)
- Provide the students with a worksheet to complete after the lesson (https://www.teachervision.com/grammar/proper-nouns-worksheet?from=search)
Qustioning
After each step, ensure to ask the students follow-up questions to assess their understanding. Examples can include:
- What are some other examples you can think of for a proper noun?
- What do all proper nouns have in common?
- What is the difference between a proper noun and a common noun?
- What is the correct way to write a proper noun?
Assessment
For assessment, you can review with the class the concepts explored during the lesson. Ask the students to provide their own example of a proper noun and provide feedback after each answer. Additionally, you can review their worksheets with them at the end of the lesson.
Differentiation
For differentiation, you can provide more challenging questions and tasks to those students that are able to act as the leaders in the group. Alternatively, offer more visual resources, such as a video, to aid those that may need more time to comprehend the concept. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JccgfKFOb9Y)
Plenary
As a plenary, ask the students what is the key difference between a proper and a common noun. Have each student provide one example of a proper noun they have learned and why this noun is a proper one.
