Introduction: Hi everyone, my name is Ms. Smith. We are going to be learning about proper nouns today. What are proper nouns? Can anyone give me an example of a proper noun? (Take some examples from children). Good job! Today, we’re going to learn how to identify proper nouns and use them correctly.

Lesson Outline:

  • Presentation/Modeling: We are going to watch this video about proper nouns (Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYPtBmZV7JQ). As we watch it, see if you can identify proper nouns in the video.

  • Guided Practice: Now, let’s try to identify some proper nouns in this text (Link: http://www.slideshare.net/Englishgrammar33/proper-noun). What are some of the proper nouns you found in the text?

  • Independent Practice: Now it’s time to practice identifying proper nouns. Take out your worksheet (Link: http://www.slideshare.net/Englishgrammar33/proper-noun) and let’s go through it together.

Questioning:

  • What are proper nouns?
  • Can you give me an example of a proper noun?
  • What did you identify as proper nouns in the video?
  • What are some of the proper nouns you found in the text?

Assessment:

Your assessment of student understanding can come from observation as students work through the activity and from verbal or written responses given to questions posed by the Teacher.

Differentiation:

Depending on the number of students, group sizes can be tailored to ensure proper support for any student that may need extra help. There can also be different activities available (e.g. a worksheet, coloring page, game, etc.) to cater to each student’s abilities and preferred learning approaches.

Plenary:

For the plenary, I would create a mind map showing different examples of proper nouns, while allowing students to add on to it. This would allow students to revisit what they learned, while providing a sense of accomplishment when they realize how many proper nouns they know.

Finally, ask students to explain in their own words what a proper noun is and how they can be used.
