Introduction
Introduce the lesson: Today we are going to be learning about proper nouns. Proper nouns are special kind of words that we use to name or label people, places, and things.
Lesson Outline
-
Watch a short video about proper nouns: - This is a great video to watch to introduce proper nouns: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dg12Zloz0P4
-
Examples and explanations: - Give examples of proper nouns (e.g. people: Caitlin, places: London, things: iPad). - Explain that they all begin with a capital letter.
-
Practicing using proper nouns: - Pass out a worksheet with blank sentences (e.g. I am visiting London in the summer). Ask students to fill in the blanks with proper nouns. - Provide examples of the sentences with the proper nouns filled in, and go over the answers as a class. - Link to a worksheet: https://www.teach-nology.com/worksheets/lang_arts/proper/1/
Questioning
- Ask open-ended questions throughout the lesson (e.g. “Why do proper nouns begin with a capital letter?” or “Can you think of a proper noun for a thing?”).
Assessment
- Give students a quiz at the end of the lesson to assess their understanding of proper nouns.
Differentiation
- Give students differentiated activities based on their level. For instance, have more advanced students create their own sentences with proper nouns, or have them come up with a list of proper nouns for places or things.
Plenary
-
Have each student come up to the whiteboard and write one proper noun.
-
Ask the students to summarise what they learnt today.
