Introduction/Anticipatory Set:
Begin by showing the class a picture of a building, such as a house, school or shop and ask them if they can name the building. Allow them to come up with different names and prompt them to say a common name for the building. Once they have done this, explain that this is an example of a Proper Noun - a name that we give to particular places and people.
Lesson Outline:
Explain that they will be learning all about Proper Nouns today.
Bring the students’ understanding of Proper Nouns to life by showing the class video clips of different places and people that they can identify as examples of Proper Nouns (e.g., An area of London – Tower Bridge; A famous scientist – Sir Isaac Newton).
Ask the students to think of more examples of Proper Nouns (e.g., A famous city – Paris; A famous book – Harry Potter)
Display a list of people and places from projects the class have done in the past and remind the students of the proper nouns (e.g., Local places – Parkfield Park; Famous people – Barack Obama).
Discuss the importance of the use of capital letters at the start of different proper nouns (e.g. To spell the name of a city, park or a person)
Using worksheets, ask the students to identify which words are Proper Nouns (e.g., “I had a picnic in the park” – “Park” is a Proper Noun).
Questioning:
Student questioning:
• What are the differences between common nouns and proper nouns?
• What are some examples of proper nouns?
Teacher questioning:
• Why do we use capital letters when writing proper nouns?
• Why do we use proper nouns when we talk or write?
Assessment:
Assess the students’ understanding and progress by asking them to identify 3 proper nouns and explain why they are proper nouns. This can be done through a worksheet, orally or as a written exercise.
Differentiation:
Support: Provide additional support for any students that appear to be struggling. This can include providing them with a list of proper nouns to work from or explain important concepts in more depth.
Challenge: Encourage the students that are more confident to come up with more examples of proper nouns and explain why each one is a proper noun
