Introduction

Explain to the class what a proper noun is and that it is important that they understand the concept. Ask them if they can provide some examples of proper nouns. It may help to draw a table on the board to illustrate the differences between proper and common nouns.

Lesson Outline

• Remind the class what a proper noun is and review some examples they provided. • Explore different types of proper nouns, such as people, places and organisations. • Introduce the importance of capitalising these nouns correctly. • Show the children an example sentence with various proper and common nouns. Have discussion about the capital letters used • Show a short video on capital letters: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zz786JLNpEU). • Provide children with worksheet activities (e.g. https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-l-8018-identify-proper-nouns-in-a-paragraph-worksheet ) to test their comprehension.

Questioning

• Pose open questions to the class to ensure understanding. • Encourage the children to recall examples of proper nouns. • Guides them in explaining why capital letters are used.

Assessment

• Observe the children as they complete the worksheet. • Informal assessment: Ask each child to write a sentence that contains a proper noun. Make notes on those who demonstrate understanding.

Differentiation

• Work with small groups that have similar abilities. • Provide word banks with the worksheet activity to support weaker students. • Provide extension tasks to those who require a challenge.

Plenary

• Reiterate the main points of the lesson by asking the students to write a summary of what they learnt. • Invite pairs to present what they learnt to the whole class. • Discuss how they can remember to use proper nouns and capital letters correctly in their writing.
