Title: Proper Nouns for Primary 3

Introduction:

Today, we will go over the basics of proper nouns. A proper noun is simply a name for a person, place, thing, or concept. It’s important to know what makes a word a proper noun because it can affect the way we use and spell the word.

By the end of class, I want everyone to be able to identify and spell out proper nouns correctly.

Lesson Outline:

I. Definition of Proper Noun (10 minutes) - Explain that a proper noun is the particular name of a person, place, thing, or concept - Answers questions to help students build on their knowledge - Show visual example and discuss (e.g. John, London, Amazon)

II. Practice Identifying and Spelling Proper Nouns (20 minutes) - Introduce worksheet to practice identifying and spelling proper nouns. - Provide instruction as needed

III. Sing-along #1 (5 minutes) - Show video from ABCya: Sing Along: The Proper Noun Song - Have students sing along and point out words that are proper nouns (e.g. fiddler and ceiling)

IV. Divide and Conquer: Proper Nouns in Sentences (15 minutes) - Divide class into 4 teams - Using worksheet, have each team identify 2-3 proper nouns in each sentence. - Have each team share their answers with the class

V. Sing-along #2 (5 minutes) - Show video from StudentTreasure: Grammar Rap - Need to know some proper nouns - Have students sing along

VI. Summarization (5 minutes) - Go over the lesson and remind students the definition of a proper noun - Ask volunteers to define proper noun for the class
