Introduction Welcome class to today’s lesson about proper nouns! Today we’ll be learning about nouns specific to people, places and things that start with a capital letter. We’ll also be exploring how to identify and use proper nouns in context when we write or talk.
Lesson Outline
- Teacher introduces what proper nouns are and why they’re important.
- Group activity: students think of as many proper nouns as they can within a given time frame (e.g. 2 minutes).
- Video: students watch a 5-minute YouTube video about proper nouns (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDFJPlp3scI)
- Interactive worksheet resource: students complete worksheet with worksheet about proper nouns (e.g. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Proper-Nouns-Worksheet-3231020)
- Whole-class discussion: Teacher leads a discussion about proper nouns and correct usage.
- Students complete an assessment about proper nouns (e.g. a fill in the blank exercise)
Questioning Throughout the lesson, the teacher will ask probing questions to assess student understanding, help build connections between lesson content, and engage the students in ways that bring the lessons to life. Examples of questions include:
- What do proper nouns start with?
- What type of nouns are proper nouns?
- Can you give me an example of a proper noun?
Assessment Students will be assessed through observation of their participation throughout the lesson. They will also complete an assessment at the end, which can take form of a fill-in-the-blank exercise or a multiple-choice test.
Differentiation For students who need more support, the teacher can pair them with other students who can help them understand the lesson topics. For students that require more of a challenge, the teacher can ask them to come up with examples of proper nouns that are more complex.
Plenary To ensure that students understand the lesson content and the importance of proper nouns, the teacher will review the key points from the lesson during the plenary. The teacher may discuss real-world examples of proper nouns, encourage the students to create their own examples and remind them of the rules for proper nouns.
